Working in conditions of high temperatures or very low temperatures can entail significant health risks and lead to a decrease in work capacity and productivity. Activities such as agriculture, civil construction, waste collection, work in ovens, foundries, and the oil industry are particularly exposed to thermal stress.
Given this scenario, it is crucial for companies to implement a plan for preventing illnesses and risks related to heat or cold. Information and training for workers about the dangers associated with environments with extreme temperatures, as well as training to identify and act on the first symptoms of thermal stress, are essential measures. Law no. 102/2009, of September 10 (legal regime for the promotion of safety and health at work), amended by Law no. 3/2014, of January 28, establishes the legal framework for the promotion of safety and health at work, emphasizing the importance of evaluating and controlling occupational risks, including those related to the thermal environment.
What is Thermal Stress and Its Consequences
Thermal stress consists of bodily discomfort caused by a temperature imbalance, resulting from excessive heat accumulation or heat loss. This imbalance results from the combination of environmental conditions, the physical activity performed, and the clothing worn. Although not a pathology in itself, it can trigger or aggravate other pathological conditions.
Symptoms can appear suddenly, and early identification is fundamental to avoid complications. Feeling intense heat or cold is the first and most obvious consequence. Other symptoms include:
- Headache
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Confusion
How to Prevent Thermal Stress
Preventing thermal stress requires the implementation of specific measures, adapted to the exposure conditions.
Preventing Thermal Stress from Heat
For hot conditions, constant hydration throughout the workday is paramount. Additionally, it is recommended:
- Use of barriers against thermal radiation, insulating clothing with reflective surfaces, or clothing cooled with air, water, or ice.
- Limit exposure time to heat.
- Identify and provide rest areas in cooler environments.
- Installation of ventilation equipment or air conditioning.
Preventing Thermal Stress from Cold
In cold environments, especially outdoors, it is advised to:
- Wear clothing that covers all body extremities.
- Use head protection compatible with personal protective equipment.
- Drink hot liquids.
- Take periodic breaks for warming up in a suitable place.
Action Protocol in Cases of Thermal Stress
Whenever work activity involves the risk of thermal stress (due to cold or heat), companies must establish a detailed action protocol. This protocol should identify the dangerousness of each situation and define specific actions to mitigate the risks. It should include:
- Assessment of the risks of injuries from contact with very cold or hot surfaces.
- A preventive acclimatization plan for workers, when applicable.
- Basic measures to be implemented at each risk level.
These and other measures are crucial to ensure the safety and health of workers, highlighting the importance of proactive management of occupational risks related to the thermal conditions of the work environment.
